Traditional Chinese Medicine: External Medicine and Trauma
Traditional Chinese medicine external medicine and trauma (中医外科骨伤) represents specialized branches of TCM treating external conditions and injuries — from skin diseases and ulcers to fractures and wounds, TCM external medicine developed sophisticated treatments including herbal poultices, surgical techniques, and bone-setting methods that predate modern medicine. These specialties remain relevant today for conditions ranging from burns to sports injuries.
TCM External Medicine
TCM external medicine (中医外科) addresses skin and surface conditions: the "six external pathogens" (六淫) — wind, cold, summer heat, dampness, dryness, and fire affecting the skin; the "damp-heat" (湿热) — the most common skin disease pattern; the "blood stasis" (血瘀) — impeding healing; the "toxicity" (毒邪) — the concept of pathogenic toxins; and the "topical treatments" (外治) — herbal washes, poultices, and ointments. Common conditions include "boils and sores" (疔疮), "eczema" (湿疹), "psoriasis" (银屑病), and "acne" (痤疮). The famous "White Rabbit Ointment" (白玉膏) and "Jing Wan Hong" (京万红) are classic formulas.
TCM Traumatology and Bone-Setting
TCM orthopedics (骨伤科) treats injuries: the " eight treatment principles" (八法) — including setting, reducing, immobilizing, and exercising; the " manual reduction" (正骨) — non-surgical bone-setting for fractures; the " immobilization" (固定) — bamboo splints and plaster equivalents; the " herbal treatment" (药物治疗) — internal and external herbs promoting healing; the "functional exercise" (功能锻炼) — rehabilitation exercises; and the "TCM trauma formulas" (伤科方) — including the famous "Yunnan Baiyao" (云南白药). The "bone-setting masters" (正骨师) were specialized practitioners with extraordinary skill.
Wound Care and Emergencies
TCM emergency medicine (中医急诊) addresses acute conditions: the "wound healing" (伤口愈合) — promoting tissue repair; the "infection control" (抗感染) — treating toxic heat and pus; the "hemostasis" (止血) — stopping bleeding; the "shock treatment" (休克) — for trauma shock; the "burns" (烧伤) — including the classic "Hydnocarpus oil" (大风子油) treatments; and the "rabies treatment" (狂犬病) — the ancient "Zhu Ke" (逐客) formula. The "Ten Thousand Wound-Opening Medicine" (万应膏) was a famous emergency formula.
