Chinese Festival Calendar: Solar Terms and Seasons
Ancient Chinese festivals marked the rhythms of the agricultural year, commemorated historical events, and reinforced family and community bonds. From the explosive celebration of the Spring Festival to the solemn rituals of Qingming, Chinese festivals encode centuries of tradition and cultural meaning.
Solar Term Festivals
The Twenty-Four Solar Terms (二十四节气) organize the agricultural year: Lichun (立春, Beginning of Spring) marks the start of spring; Yushui (雨水, Rain Water) marks the expected rainfall; Qingming (清明, Clear and Bright) combines ancestor worship with spring outings; and Grain Rain (谷雨, Grain Rain) marks the season for planting.
Seasonal Celebrations
Seasonal festivals include: the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节) in summer; the Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节) in autumn; and the Laba Festival (腊八节) in winter. Each festival has specific foods: zongzi for Dragon Boat, mooncakes for Mid-Autumn, Laba porridge for the Laba Festival.
