The Ming Dynasty: Restoration and Cultural Achievement

The Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) restored Chinese rule after the Mongol Yuan, establishing a period of economic prosperity, cultural achievement, and architectural splendor. The Ming built the Forbidden City, completed the Great Wall, and sent the treasure voyages of Zheng He — while also developing the blue-and-white porcelain that remains China's most famous ceramic export.

Restoration and Achievement

The Ming overthrew Mongol rule and reestablished Chinese cultural traditions. The Ming rebuilt the Great Wall; constructed the Forbidden City (故宫); and sponsored the "Yongle Encyclopedia" (永乐大典), the largest encyclopedia in pre-modern history.

Cultural Flourishing

Ming culture produced the "Journey to the West" novel; the drama of Tang Xianzu; the painting schools of the Wu School; and the porcelain of Jingdezhen. Ming furniture — simple, elegant, and functional — remains highly prized today.
