The Song Dynasty: Economic Revolution and Innovation
The Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE) was one of the most economically and culturally advanced societies in the pre-modern world. Despite military weakness against neighbors, the Song achieved remarkable prosperity through commerce, urbanization, and technological innovation, creating a sophisticated urban civilization.
Economic Revolution
Song China experienced an economic revolution: the expansion of commerce and markets; the development of a money economy using copper coins and paper money; the growth of cities — Kaifeng had over one million inhabitants. The "economic revolution" of the Song parallels Europe's later development.
Technological Innovation
Song technological innovations included: movable type printing (毕昇); the compass for navigation; gunpowder weapons; and sophisticated clockwork mechanisms. These innovations reflected Song China's sophisticated economy and its emphasis on practical knowledge.
