The Great Wall: History and Engineering

The Great Wall of China (长城) is one of the most impressive architectural feats in human history — a series of fortifications stretching over 20,000 kilometers across northern China, built over two thousand years to protect the Chinese heartland from nomadic invasions.

Construction History

Wall construction began during the Warring States period (5th century BCE), when various states built walls to defend against each other. The Qin Dynasty (221–206 BCE) connected these walls into a unified defense system. The most impressive sections were built during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).

Engineering and Design

The Great Wall was an engineering marvel: watchtowers (烽火台) for signaling; garrison stations for troops; strategic passes like Shanhaiguan (山海关) and Jiayuguan (嘉峪关). The wall was built using local materials — stone, brick, tamped earth — adapted to the terrain.
