Chinese Traditional Clothing: Hanfu and Qipao

Chinese traditional clothing evolved over three millennia, from the robes of the Han Dynasty to the elaborate garments of the imperial court. Today, traditional clothing remains important for festivals, ceremonies, and the growing hanfu movement seeking to revive historical dress.

Historical Development

Chinese clothing developed distinctive features: the cross-collared robe (交领), the wrapped right-over-left front (右衽), and the belt (腰带). Each dynasty added styles: the flowing robes of the Tang; the elaborate layered garments of the Ming; the Manchu-inspired dress of the Qing.

Modern Revival

The hanfu movement (汉服运动) seeks to revive traditional Han Chinese dress. Enthusiasts wear reconstructed historical clothing for festivals and cultural events. Qipao (旗袍), the elegant Manchu-influenced dress, remains popular for formal occasions.
