Chinese Cosmology: Astronomy and Celestial Order

The ancient Chinese understood the cosmos through sophisticated systems of astronomy, astrology, and cosmology. Chinese astronomers recorded celestial events with unprecedented precision, developed accurate calendars, and created a cosmological framework that organized the universe, the state, and the individual.

Astronomical Achievements

Chinese astronomers compiled the most complete star catalogs of the ancient world. They recorded solar and lunar eclipses, comets, and novae — including the supernova of 1006 CE, the brightest stellar event in recorded history. The Chinese calendar was among the most accurate in the world.

Cosmological Systems

Chinese cosmology was based on the concept of the Threefold Heaven: the Highest Heaven (太玄天) of the deities; the Stars Heaven (玄虚天) of the celestial bodies; and the Air Heaven (苍穹天), the visible sky. This framework organized the universe into hierarchical levels reflecting social order.
