Ancient Chinese Navigation and Maritime Trade
Ancient Chinese navigation and maritime trade dominated the waters of East and Southeast Asia for centuries. Chinese shipbuilding, compass navigation, and maritime trade networks connected China with Japan, Southeast Asia, India, and beyond, establishing China as a maritime power.
Maritime Technology
Chinese maritime technology included: the junk (帆船), with its distinctive battened sails; the compass (指南针) for navigation; watertight bulkheads (水密隔舱) for safety; and sophisticated port facilities. These technologies enabled long-distance maritime trade and exploration.
Maritime Trade
Chinese merchants dominated regional trade: the "Maritime Silk Road" connected China with Southeast Asia, India, and the Arabian Peninsula. Chinese exports included porcelain, silk, and tea; imports included spices, pearls, and horses. The tribute system organized diplomatic and trade relations.
