Design Principles

Chinese gardens are designed according to Daoist and Chan Buddhist principles: avoiding straight lines, incorporating "borrowed scenery" from beyond the garden walls, and arranging elements to create the illusion of vast space within a small area. Every rock placement and water feature is deliberate, with symbolic meaning.

The "Four Classical Gardens of Suzhou" are the masterpieces: Humble Administrator's Garden (拙政园), the largest; Lingering Garden (留园), known for architectural variety; Master of the Nets Garden (网师园), the most intimate; and Lion Grove Garden (狮子林), famous for its rock labyrinth.
