Qigong: Breath Cultivation and Healing Practice
Qigong (气功) — practices of breath cultivation, movement, and meditation — is one of the most important components of traditional Chinese medicine and a cornerstone of Chinese health culture. The term combines "qi" (气, vital energy) and "gong" (功, cultivated skill), referring to practices that cultivate and circulate qi for health, longevity, and spiritual development.
Categories of Qigong
Qigong is traditionally divided into five categories: dynamic (动功), with active movements; static (静功), emphasizing meditation and breathing; walking (行功), practiced while walking; wellness (养生功), for health maintenance; and martial (武术气功), for combat training. Each category includes hundreds of distinct exercises.
Health Benefits
Modern research has validated qigong's benefits for stress reduction, cardiovascular health, immune function, and chronic pain management. Studies have shown that regular qigong practice can lower blood pressure, improve balance, and enhance quality of life. Qigong is now practiced worldwide as a form of mind-body exercise.
