Ancient Chinese Childhood Education: Family and Tutoring

Ancient Chinese childhood education began in the family and private tutoring before formal schooling. From the earliest ages, children were taught the foundations of Chinese civilization: the characters, the classics, proper conduct, and the values that would shape them as members of Chinese society.

Family Education

The family was the first school. Parents taught children basic manners (礼), the names of ancestors, and simple moral stories. The "Three Character Classic" (三字经, San Zi Jing), a text of rhymed couplets teaching history, ethics, and basic knowledge, was memorized by generations of Chinese children beginning at age three.

Private Tutoring

Wealthy families hired private tutors (西席) to educate their sons in the Confucian classics, calligraphy, and arithmetic. Girls were educated in domestic skills and, in elite families, in literature and the arts. Education was highly valued: "Even a poor family can have a scholar son" (家贫出孝子).
