Song Dynasty Poetry: Su Shi, Li Qingzhao and Literary Genius
Song Dynasty poetry represents one of the greatest flowerings of Chinese literature — a tradition that produced some of the most beloved poets in Chinese history: Su Shi (Su Dongpo), Li Qingzhao, Xin Qiji, and Lu You. While Tang Dynasty poetry is considered the pinnacle of regulated verse, Song Dynasty poetry is celebrated for its emotional depth, personal expression, and innovative use of new forms.
Su Shi: The Man of Talent
Su Shi (苏轼, 1037–1101) — also known as Su Dongpo — was the most versatile literary genius of the Song Dynasty. A renowned poet, essayist, painter, calligrapher, and cook, Su Shi's poetry combines intellectual depth with emotional warmth. His famous lyric poems (词, ci) on the Red Cliffs and on his exile in Huangzhou are among the most celebrated in Chinese literature.
Li Qingzhao: The Woman Poet
Li Qingzhao (李清照, 1084–c. 1155) is the most famous female poet in Chinese history. Her lyrics (词) capture the joy of young love and the sorrow of later loss with extraordinary delicacy and emotional authenticity. Her pioneering criticism of earlier poets' work established her as an intellectual as well as a poet.
