The Twenty-Four Solar Terms: Agricultural Calendar and Seasonal Wisdom

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms (二十四节气, ershisi jieqi) represent one of humanity's most sophisticated systems of environmental knowledge — a calendar that organizes the agricultural year into 24 seasonal segments, each with specific weather patterns, agricultural activities, and health recommendations. Developed over two millennia, this system reflects the Chinese understanding of the relationship between human activity and natural cycles.

The Solar Terms

The solar terms divide the year into segments: Lichun (立春, Beginning of Spring), Yushui (雨水, Rain Water), Jingzhe (惊蛰, Awakening of Insects), Chunfen (春分, Spring Equinox), and continuing through the year to Dahan (大寒, Major Cold) and Xiaohan (小寒, Minor Cold).

Agricultural Calendar

Each solar term is associated with specific agricultural activities: sowing, transplanting rice, harvesting, storing grain. The solar terms remain important in rural China today, where farmers consult them alongside modern weather forecasts.
