Chinese Therapeutic Massage: Tui Na, Cupping, and Healing Arts

Chinese traditional medicine encompasses several therapeutic modalities beyond herbal medicine and acupuncture — including tui na (推拿, therapeutic massage), cupping (拔罐, ba guan), gua sha (刮痧, scraping), and moxibustion (艾灸, ai jiu). These techniques, developed over millennia, remain in active use today alongside modern biomedical treatment.

Tui Na Massage

Tui na (literally "push and grasp") is a form of therapeutic massage that combines acupressure, massage, and manipulation of the joints. Unlike relaxation massage, tui na is intended to treat specific conditions by stimulating the flow of qi and releasing blocked energy.

Cupping and Gua Sha

Cupping involves placing heated glass jars on the skin to create suction, believed to draw out pathogens and promote healing. Gua sha involves scraping the skin with a smooth tool to release "sha" — stagnation believed to cause pain and illness. Both leave distinctive marks that can take days to fade.
