Ancient Chinese Metallurgy: Bronze, Iron, and Steel from Shang to Han

Ancient Chinese metallurgy produced some of the most remarkable metalwork in world history, from the bronze ritual vessels of the Shang Dynasty to the steel swords of the Han Dynasty. Chinese metallurgists developed blast furnace technology, bellows systems, and crucible steel production centuries before these techniques appeared in Europe.

Shang Dynasty Bronze

The bronze vessels of the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE) are among the most spectacular achievements of early Chinese civilization. Made using piece-mold casting — a technique unique to China — these vessels, weighing up to 875 kilograms, were used in ancestor worship rituals and bear some of the earliest examples of Chinese writing.

Cast Iron and Steel

China was the first civilization to develop cast iron production on an industrial scale. Han Dynasty blast furnaces could produce thousands of tons of cast iron per year, enabling the mass production of agricultural tools and weapons. The technique of making steel from cast iron (百炼钢, bainliangang) produced swords of exceptional quality.
