Ancient Chinese Shipbuilding: Junks, Treasure Ships, and Maritime Mastery
Ancient Chinese shipbuilding was among the most sophisticated in the world. Chinese shipwrights developed techniques of hull construction, sail design, and navigation that enabled the Chinese fleet to dominate the seas of the Pacific and Indian oceans for centuries.
Junk Rigging
The Chinese junk — a sailing vessel design using battened sails and a watertight bulkhead system — was one of the most seaworthy vessels of the pre-modern world. The battened sail (as opposed to the Western lateen sail) was self-reffing: when the wind was too strong, the sail would reef itself automatically.
Zheng He's Treasure Ships
The Ming Dynasty treasure ships of Admiral Zheng He were reportedly up to 137 meters long — massive vessels by any pre-modern standard. Though historical evidence suggests the largest were closer to 60-70 meters, they were still among the largest wooden vessels ever built.
