Ancient Chinese Astronomy and Calendar Science

Ancient Chinese astronomy was among the most sophisticated in the world. Chinese astronomers recorded solar and lunar eclipses, tracked planets, mapped stars, and developed accurate calendars, achievements frequently ahead of European counterparts.

Star Catalogs and Records

The Book of Han contains the oldest systematic star catalog in the world. Chinese astronomical records document comets, novae, and the appearance of a nova in 1006 CE that was the brightest stellar event in recorded history.

The Chinese Calendar

The Chinese calendar (nongli) reconciles the 365-day solar year with the 354-day lunar year. Each year is associated with one of sixty heavenly stems and earthly branches, organizing time into meaningful symbolic units.
