Chinese Bridges: Engineering Marvels Across Two Millennia

Ancient Chinese bridges are among the most beautiful engineering structures in the world, combining precision with artistic beauty. From stone arch bridges of the Han Dynasty to elaborately decorated covered bridges, Chinese bridge engineers developed forms that influenced bridge building worldwide.

The Zhaozhou Bridge

The Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei Province, built during the Sui Dynasty (595-605 CE), has a span of 37 meters and remains in use today as the world's oldest open-spandrel stone arch bridge.

Covered Bridges of Fujian

The covered bridges (langqiao) of Fujian and Guangxi provinces protect bridge timbers from rain and sun. The Huangsayuan Bridge in Guangxi has been in continuous use for over 900 years.
