Chinese Cloisonne: Jingtailan and the Art of Enamel
Chinese cloisonne (jingtailan) is one of China's most celebrated craft traditions. Copper wires are soldered to copper bodies and filled with colored enamel, creating intricate designs of extraordinary richness. Named after the Jingtai reign of the Ming Dynasty.
The Technique
Cloisonne production is a multi-stage process: copper forming, wire soldering, enamel filling, firing, grinding, and gilding. A single piece may require dozens of firings over weeks or months.
Imperial Legacy
Cloisonne was a luxury craft of the imperial court. The Jingtai blue became the signature color of Ming cloisonne and has never been precisely replicated. Today, cloisonne production is a designated Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.
