The Chinese Abacus: Ancient Calculator and Living Tradition
The Chinese abacus (suanpan) was the primary calculating machine in China for over a thousand years. With bamboo beads on wooden rods, it performs all basic arithmetic operations with speed rivaling electronic calculators.
Origins from Counting Rods
Counting rods were used from the Warring States Period. The abacus itself appeared during the Tang Dynasty, with two beads in the upper section (worth 5) and five in the lower section (worth 1).
The Art of Calculation
Skilled abacus masters could perform calculations faster than clerks with paper. The technique of mental calculation on an imaginary abacus (zhuxinsuan) is still taught in schools to develop mathematical intuition.
