Preceding Qingming Festival, the Cold Food Festival involves a traditional three-day ban on fire and cooking, during which people eat only cold foods. Historical Origins

The festival dates back over 2,500 years to the Spring and Autumn Period. It commemorates Jie Zitui, a loyal minister of Duke Wen of Jin state. When the duke was exiled, Jie followed him faithfully for 19 years, even cutting flesh from his own leg to feed the hungry duke. When the duke later wanted to reward him, Jie had already retreated into the mountains with his mother.

To force Jie out of hiding, the duke ordered a fire set to the mountain. Unfortunately, Jie chose to remain hidden rather than下山, and he and his mother perished in the flames. To honor his memory, the duke declared a three-day fire ban, during which only cold food could be eaten.

During the festival, no fires may be lit for cooking, and only cold foods are consumed. Traditional foods include cold noodles, cold rice, and preserved foods prepared before the festival. People visit Jie Zitui's tomb to pay respects and offer sacrifices.
