Wuyi Mountains: Tea Culture and Danxia Beauty
The Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province are a UNESCO World Heritage Site where dramatic Danxia peaks meet ancient tea gardens. The mountains have been a center of Buddhist and Taoist worship and are the birthplace of Dahongpao tea.
Danxia Peaks
The Wuyi peaks are classic Danxia formations: steep red cliffs rising from the forest, often with caves and waterfalls. The Nine Bend River winds through the mountains, offering boat rides past dramatic scenery.
Dahongpao Tea
Wuyi is the home of Dahongpao (Big Red Robe), one of the most famous teas in China. Six original Dahongpao bushes, over 350 years old, grow on a cliff face in the Tianjishan area. Their descendants produce teas that can sell for thousands of dollars per gram.
Ancient Sites
The mountains have been sacred since ancient times. Taoist temples, Buddhist monasteries, and hermit caves dot the slopes. The ancient架壑船 (cliff coffins) hang in caves above the river, a prehistoric burial practice.
Bamboo Rafting
The Nine Bend River bamboo raft ride is the highlight of any Wuyi visit. Drifting past vertical cliffs, hidden caves, and calling birds, the two-hour journey offers close-up views of the Danxia scenery.
Getting There
Wuyi is reached by high-speed train from Fuzhou or Xiamen. The scenic area can be explored in 2 to 3 days. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.
