The Danxia Landforms: Colored Mountains of China

Danxia landforms are a unique geological feature found primarily in southeastern and northwestern China. The name comes from Danxia Mountain in Guangdong, the type locality. The red sandstone formations, shaped by millions of years of erosion, create some of China most colorful landscapes.

Formation

Danxia landforms develop when red sandstone is deposited in ancient lakes and rivers, then uplifted by tectonic forces. The soft sandstone is then eroded into peaks, cliffs, and valleys. Iron oxide in the rock gives the characteristic red color.

Key Sites

Major Danxia sites include: Danxia Mountain in Guangdong, Zhangye Danxia in Gansu with rainbow-colored cliffs, Mt. Danxia in Guangdong, and Wuyishan in Fujian. Each site has distinctive colors and formations shaped by local conditions.

Zhangye Danxia

Zhangye Danxia in Gansu is the most colorful Danxia site. The rainbow-colored mountains appear to be painted, with layers of red, orange, yellow, and green sandstone. Sunrise and sunset bring out the most vivid colors. Viewing platforms offer panoramic views.

UNESCO Sites

China has six UNESCO World Heritage sites featuring Danxia landforms, recognized for their geological significance and scenic beauty. These sites represent different stages of Danxia development and different geographical settings.
