Huangguoshu Waterfall: The Largest in Asia
Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou Province is the largest waterfall in China and one of the largest in Asia. The waterfall is 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide, creating a thundering curtain of water that has inspired poets and painters for centuries.
The Main Waterfall
The waterfall consists of 18 individual falls, though the main curtain is the most dramatic. During flood season, all 18 falls connect to form a massive cascade 270 meters wide. The spray from the falls creates rainbows on sunny days.
Behind the Waterfall
One of the unique features of Huangguoshu is that visitors can walk behind the waterfall through a cave called 水帘洞. The cave runs behind the curtain of water, offering a unique perspective and shelter from the spray.
The Scenic Area
The Huangguoshu Scenic Area includes the main waterfall, surrounding karst peaks, the karst cave system, and Dragon Palace. The Dragon Palace features an underground river, stalactites, and boat rides through the cavern.
Visiting
Huangguoshu is about 45 kilometers from Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou. The site is accessible by bus. The best time to visit is summer when the water flow is strongest. Spring and autumn are also good. Wear waterproof clothing near the falls.
