The Li River: Cruising the Guilin Landscape
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is considered one of the most scenic boat journeys in the world. For 83 kilometers, the river passes through classic Chinese landscape: karst peaks rising from the water, water buffalo in rice paddies, and fishermen with cormorants.
The Journey
The cruise typically takes 4 to 5 hours, departing from Guilin docks. The river winds between limestone karst peaks, creating constantly changing scenery. The most famous section is the Nine Horse Fresco Hill, where a cliff face shows nine horses that visitors try to count.
Scenic Highlights
Key viewpoints include Elephant Trunk Hill at the Guilin start, the reflection of peaks in the water, Xingping old town, and the Yangshuo arrival where the river opens into a broad plain. Local fishermen still use cormorants to catch fish.
Photography Tips
Early morning departures offer the best light and mist. The water is calmest in the morning. The most iconic photos come from the bends where peaks reflect in the river. Evening cruises offer sunset views.
Yangshuo
Yangshuo at the end of the cruise is a destination in itself. West Street is a historic market street. The surrounding countryside offers cycling, caving, and rural scenery. The Show of Impressions, directed by Zhang Yimou, performs on the Li River.
