The Karst Landscapes of South China

South China is home to the most extensive and spectacular karst landscapes in the world. These limestone formations, shaped by millions of years of water erosion, create the iconic scenery of Guilin, Yangshuo, and much of Guangxi, Guizhou, and Yunnan.

Formation

Karst forms when limestone is dissolved by rainwater containing carbonic acid. Over millions of years, this creates sinkholes, underground rivers, caves, and the distinctive tower-like peaks that characterize the landscape. The peaks can rise hundreds of meters from flat plains.

Guilin and Yangshuo

Guilin and Yangshuo are the most famous karst areas. The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo passes through classic karst scenery: tower-like peaks rising from the river, rice paddies, and water buffalo. The moonlight reflected on the Li River at night is legendary.

Guizhou Karst

Guizhou Province has some of the most untouched karst in China. Maling River Canyon offers dramatic scenery. The Buyi and Miao people have lived among these karst formations for centuries, their villages built into the hillsides.

Caves

Karst caves are found throughout South China. Reed Flute Cave near Guilin is famous for its illuminated formations. Many caves contain underground rivers, waterfalls, and stalactites that have grown for thousands of years.
