Lijiang Old Town: Naxi Culture and the Dongba Script
Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Chinas most successful examples of heritage preservation. The town is the cultural heart of the Naxi people, an ethnic group with a unique matriarchal tradition and ancient religious script.
Naxi People
The Naxi are one of Yunnans most distinctive minorities. Unlike most Chinese societies, Naxi traditionally had matrilineal family structures. Women held property and made important decisions. This tradition has faded but traces remain.
Dongba Script
The Naxi have one of the only surviving pictographic writing systems in the world. Dongba priests use the script to write religious texts, histories, and folk tales. The script resembles ancient Chinese oracle bone writing and is studied by linguists worldwide.
Architecture
Lijiangs architecture is unique: timber-framed houses with black-tiled roofs, open courtyards, and elaborate wood carvings. The houses are built over flowing streams that run through the town. The Mufu (木府) or Governors Mansion is a miniature Forbidden City built by the Naxi king.
Muzik and Dance
Lijiang is famous for Naxi ancient music, performed by elderly musicians who learned ancient melodies passed down over centuries. The music combines Tang, Song, and Tibetan influences. The Naxi ballet show is a popular evening entertainment.
