Longji Rice Terraces: Dragons Backbone of China

The Longji (Dragon Backbone) Rice Terraces in Guangxi are among the most famous in China. The name comes from the layered terraces that resemble a dragon scales or a giant ridge stretching across the mountains.

Location and Access

Longji is about 100 kilometers north of Guilin. The terraces are divided into Ping An and Long Hair villages. Ping An is the original and more traditional village; Long Hair is larger and more developed. Both offer spectacular views.

The Terraces

The terraces cover an area of over 66 square kilometers and span altitudes from 300 to 1,100 meters. The longest terrace stretches 100 meters vertically. The water-filled terraces in spring and the golden rice in autumn are the most photogenic.

Zhuang and Yao Culture

The area is home to Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities. Zhuang women wear distinctive blue and white clothing. Yao women are known for their long hair, which they never cut. Yao villages offer cultural experiences and homestays.

Hiking and Trekking

Longji is excellent for hiking. Trails connect the villages and wind through the terraces. The best views are at Dazhai and Ping An viewpoints. Sunrises over the terraces are particularly beautiful.
