Dunhuang Mogao Caves: Buddhist Art Across a Millennium

The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Gansu, contain the world largest collection of Buddhist art. Over 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,415 painted statues span a thousand years of creation, from the 4th to the 14th century. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History of the Caves

The first cave was cut in 366 CE by a monk named Le Zun, who reportedly saw a vision of a thousand Buddhas glowing in the cliff. Over the following centuries, Buddhist monks, patrons, and pilgrims expanded the cave complex. The caves served as a pilgrimage site, art workshop, and devotional center.

The Paintings

The murals depict Buddhist sutras, cosmological maps, and scenes of daily life. Colors remain vivid after 1,000 years. The paintings show Indian, Central Asian, and Chinese artistic influences merging and evolving. Flying apsaras (celestial musicians) float across many ceilings. The paintings are a visual encyclopedia of Buddhist practice.

The Statues

Over 2,415 painted statues fill the caves, ranging from 2 centimeters to 35 meters tall. The largest is a 26-meter Maitreya Buddha in Cave 96. The statues are carved from sandstone and covered with clay, paint, and gold leaf. Some original colors and gilding survive.

The Hidden Library

In 1900, a Taoist monk named Wang Yuanlu discovered a walled-up cave containing over 40,000 manuscripts, paintings, and textiles. The discovery, now called the Dunhuang Library, included Buddhist texts, some dating to the 5th century, and documents in 15 languages. Much of the collection was sold to explorers and is now scattered in museums worldwide.
