Jiankou to Mutianyu: The Wild Great Wall Section
The Great Wall section between Jiankou and Mutianyu is one of the most dramatic and least restored stretches of the wall. Unlike the crowded tourist sections near Beijing, this route offers crumbling towers, overgrown battlements, and sweeping views through the trees.
Jiankou Section
Jiankou is a unrestored wild section about 70 kilometers north of Beijing. The bricks are weathered and partially collapsed; vegetation grows through the parapets. The views are stunning: the wall snakes over steep ridges with forests below. This is how the wall looked before restoration.
The H Mutianyu Connection
The route from Jiankou to Mutianyu is about 10 kilometers of hiking. The path climbs to the wall at Jiankou, follows the ridge, and descends to Mutianyu. The intermediate Zhengbeihu section offers views of both wild and restored wall.
Wild vs Restored
Mutianyu has been fully restored with cable cars, ramps, and tourist facilities. After the wild hike, the restored section feels like another attraction entirely. The contrast highlights both the romance of the ruin and the accessibility of restoration.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn is the best season: clear skies, colorful foliage, and comfortable temperatures. Spring brings wildflowers. Summer is hot and humid. Winter offers snow-covered towers but cold conditions.
Practical Information
Guided hikes are available from Beijing, or you can hire a car. The hike is moderately difficult; some sections are steep. Bring water and snacks. Accommodation is available at nearby guesthouses.
