The Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318) is one of China most scenic and challenging drives. The route crosses 14 mountains over 4,000 meters, passes through Tibetan towns, and offers constantly changing scenery. The journey takes about 7 days.

Route Overview

The highway runs from Chengdu to Lhasa, covering over 2,000 kilometers. The road crosses high passes, deep gorges, and forested valleys. The scenery ranges from subtropical to alpine. The journey is an adventure in itself.

Kangding Gateway

Kangding is the first major stop, where Han China meets Tibet. The city sits at 2,500 meters, surrounded by peaks. The Love Song of Kangding is known throughout China. The town marks the transition to Tibetan culture.

Nyingchi Region

Nyingchi in southeastern Tibet is the lowest and wettest part of the region. Forests cover the slopes; flowers bloom in spring. The climate is mild compared to Lhasa. The scenery resembles the Swiss Alps.

Bomi and Ranwu

Bomi is a forested town with nearby glaciers. Ranwu Lake is one of the most photogenic lakes in Tibet, with mirror reflections of snow peaks. The scenery is dramatic.

Basu Tso

Basu Tso is a sacred lake near the road. The water is deep blue, surrounded by peaks. Pilgrims circumambulate the lake. The setting is serene.

Practicalities

The journey requires a Tibet Travel Permit. Most travelers join organized tours. The best time is May to June or September to October. Summer is rainy; winter is cold and passes may close. Altitude acclimatization is essential.
