Lhasa to Kathmandu: The Overland Journey
The overland journey from Lhasa to Kathmandu is one of the world great road trips. The route crosses the Himalayas, passes Everest Base Camp, and descends from Tibetan plateau to Nepalese valleys. The journey takes about 8 days.
Route Overview
The journey follows the Friendship Highway, built by China in the 1960s. The road crosses several high passes, including the Gyatso La at 5,220 meters. The scenery transitions from Tibetan plateau to Himalayan peaks to Nepalese foothills.
Shigatse Stop
Shigatse, Tibet second city, is a major stop. The Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lamas, is the highlight. The city offers acclimatization before continuing to higher elevations.
Everest Base Camp
The North Base Camp in Tibet is accessible by road. The view of Everest from Rongbuk Monastery is dramatic. The journey includes an overnight near Base Camp. The mountain dominates the horizon.
Zhangmu Border
Zhangmu (Khasa) is the border town on the Tibetan side. The town clings to a hillside, with waterfalls and lush vegetation. The transition from Tibetan plateau to subtropical valley is dramatic. Customs and immigration take several hours.
Kodari to Kathmandu
From Kodari on the Nepali side, the road descends through forested valleys to Kathmandu. The scenery becomes increasingly green. The journey ends in Kathmandu, a city of temples and ancient squares.
Practicalities
The journey requires a Tibet Travel Permit and Chinese visa. Group travel is usually required. The best time is April to May or September to October. Winter is cold and passes may close; summer is rainy.
