Xishuangbanna: The Dai Kingdom of Yunnan

Xishuangbanna in southern Yunnan is home to the Dai people, whose culture, language, and architecture are closer to Southeast Asia than to Han China. The region offers tropical scenery, Buddhist temples, and a unique cultural experience.

Dai Culture

The Dai are Theravada Buddhists, like their neighbors in Thailand and Laos. Their language is related to Thai. Traditional Dai houses are built on stilts, with wooden frames and thatched roofs. Women wear colorful sarongs and silver jewelry. The Water Splashing Festival in April is the major celebration.

Manting Park

Manting Park in Jinghong, the regional capital, is a showcase of Dai culture. The park contains a temple, traditional houses, and gardens. Cultural performances include peacock dance and Dai music. The park is a good introduction to the region.

Tropical Botanical Garden

The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden is one of China largest, with over 10,000 plant species. The garden preserves tropical rainforest and educates visitors about biodiversity. Highlights include orchid houses, palm groves, and rare trees.

Wild Elephant Valley

Wild Elephant Valley is a nature reserve where wild Asian elephants can sometimes be seen. Observation platforms overlook salt licks and water holes. Sightings are not guaranteed, but the forest setting is worth the visit. The elephants are most active at dawn and dusk.

Mekong River

The Mekong, called Lancang in China, flows through Xishuangbanna. Boat trips pass forested banks and Dai villages. The river continues through Southeast Asia, connecting China with Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand.

Getting There

Xishuangbanna has an airport with flights from Kunming and other cities. Plan 3 to 4 days to see the main attractions. November to April is the dry season and best time to visit. Summer is hot and rainy.
