Wuzhishan: The Highest Peak of Hainan Island

Wuzhishan, the highest peak on Hainan Island at 1,867 meters, is a tropical mountain with rainforest, waterfalls, and Li and Miao minority villages. The mountain offers a cool escape from the coastal heat and a glimpse into Hainan indigenous culture.

Tropical Rainforest

Wuzhishan is covered in primary tropical rainforest, with towering trees, vines, and epiphytes. The biodiversity is among the richest in China. Over 3,000 plant species have been recorded. The forest is home to Hainan gibbons, one of the world rarest primates.

Five Finger Peaks

The mountain name comes from its five peaks, which resemble fingers. The highest peak offers views over the surrounding forest and, on clear days, to the coast. The climb takes 4 to 6 hours; a trail leads to the summit.

Li and Miao Culture

The slopes of Wuzhishan are home to Li and Miao ethnic minorities. Li women are known for their embroidery and weaving, particularly the traditional Li brocade. Villages with traditional houses welcome visitors. Cultural performances include dance and music.

Waterfalls

Several waterfalls cascade down Wuzhishan slopes. The most accessible are near the trailheads. The water is cool and clear, offering relief from hiking. The falls are most impressive after rain.

Cool Climate

At elevation, Wuzhishan is significantly cooler than the coast. Summer temperatures are pleasant, making the mountain a retreat from Sanya heat. Winter can be chilly at night.

Getting There

Wuzhishan is about 2 hours by road from Haikou or 3 hours from Sanya. The town of Wuzhishan at the base has basic accommodation. Plan 2 days for hiking and cultural visits. Spring and autumn are the best times; summer is lush, winter is cool.
