Putuo Mountain: The Buddhist Island of Zhejiang
Putuoshan, an island in the Zhoushan archipelago of Zhejiang Province, is one of China four sacred Buddhist mountains. Dedicated to Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, it has been a pilgrimage site for over a thousand years. The island combines religious significance with coastal scenery.
Guanyin Statue
A 33-meter bronze statue of Guanyin stands on the island, visible from approaching boats. The statue is the icon of Putuoshan. Pilgrims circumambulate the base, praying for compassion and mercy. The statue was erected in 1997 but has quickly become a landmark.
Puji Temple
Puji Temple is the largest on Putuoshan, dating to the 10th century. Its main hall contains a massive statue of Guanyin with 32 heads and 24 arms, representing her many manifestations. The temple is the center of island Buddhism.
Fayu and Huiji Temples
Fayu Temple, on the island east side, is known for its architecture and sea views. Huiji Temple, at the highest point, offers panoramic views of the ocean. Together with Puji, these are the three great temples of Putuoshan.
Hundred-Step Beach
Putuoshan has beaches where pilgrims and tourists swim and relax. Hundred-Step Beach is the most accessible. The combination of Buddhist temples and seaside recreation is unique among China sacred mountains.
Island Setting
Putuoshan is a small island, about 12 square kilometers. The surrounding ocean creates a sense of isolation and peace. The island is car-free; walking paths connect all sites. The pace is slower than mainland China.
Getting There
Putuoshan is reached by ferry from Zhoushan or Ningbo, which have flights and trains. Plan 2 days on the island. Spring and autumn are the best times; summer is crowded, winter is quiet but cold.
