Guilin and Yangshuo: The Karst Peaks of Guangxi

Guilin and Yangshuo in Guangxi Province are home to China most iconic landscape: karst peaks rising from the Li River like green teeth. This scenery has inspired Chinese poets and painters for centuries and appears on the 20-yuan note. The region offers river cruises, cave exploration, and rural cycling.

Li River Cruise

The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is one of China classic tourist experiences. The 4-hour journey passes karst peaks, bamboo groves, and fishing villages. Cormorant#G fishermen demonstrate their traditional technique. The scenery is most dramatic between Xingping and Yangshuo. Many visitors take the cruise one way and return by bus.

Yangshuo Town

Yangshuo, once a backpacker haven, has become a major tourist destination. West Street is lined with cafes, bars, and souvenir shops. But beyond the commercial core, the surrounding countryside offers genuine rural beauty. Cycling through rice paddies with karst peaks on the horizon is a highlight.

Yulong River

The Yulong River, a Li tributary, is quieter and more intimate. Bamboo rafts drift past peaks and villages. Cycling paths follow the river through countryside. The scenery is similar to the Li River but without the cruise boats.

Reed Flute Cave

The Reed Flute Cave in Guilin is a massive cavern filled with stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by colored lights. The formations create an underground landscape of pillars, curtains, and towers. The cave has been a tourist attraction since the 1940s.

Longji Rice Terraces

About 2 hours from Guilin, the Longji*Longji (Dragon Backbone) Rice Terraces carve the mountains into ribbons of green and gold. The terraces are most photogenic in spring when flooded and autumn when golden. Zhuang and Yao minority villages dot the slopes.

Getting There

Guilin has an airport with flights from major cities. High-speed trains connect to Guangzhou and other cities. Plan 3 to 4 days for Guilin and Yangshuo. Spring and autumn are the best times; summer is hot and humid, winter is mild but can be foggy.
