Huanglong: The Golden Dragon of Sichuan
Huanglong in Sichuan Province is famous for its travertine pools, formed by calcium carbonate deposits that create a golden ridge resembling a dragon. The site also contains forests, waterfalls, and hot springs, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site often paired with nearby Jiuzhaigou.
Travertine Pools
The signature feature of Huanglong is its series of travertine pools, stretching 3.6 kilometers down the valley. The pools are rimmed with gold-colored travertine and filled with water in shades of blue and green. The formation resembles a golden dragon, hence the name Yellow Dragon.
Five Color Ponds
The Five Color Ponds at the upper end are the most vivid, with waters displaying multiple colors: turquoise, emerald, yellow, and blue. The colors change with light and angle. The ponds are smaller than Jiuzhaigou lakes but equally intense.
Huanglong Temple
Huanglong Temple, at the head of the travertine formation, is a Taoist and Buddhist site dating to the Ming Dynasty. The temple is built into the mountain, with views over the golden pools below. Pilgrims climb here during festivals.
Xuebaoding Peak
Xuebaoding at 5,588 meters is the highest peak in the Minshan range. Snow covers the summit year-round. The peak is visible from Huanglong on clear days. For mountaineers, it offers a challenging ascent.
Altitude Considerations
Huanglong sits at 3,000–3,500 meters. The walk up the valley is strenuous at this altitude. A cable car is available for part of the journey. Take it slow and stay hydrated. Acclimatize in Jiuzhaigou or Songpan first.
Getting There
Huanglong is about 2 hours from Jiuzhaigou by road. Most visitors combine the two. The Huanglong Jiuzhaigou Airport serves both sites. Allow a half-day for Huanglong. The best time is May to October; winter closes the cable car.
