Jiuzhaigou: The Fairyland of Colored Lakes in Sichuan
Jiuzhaigou in northern Sichuan is one of China most famous natural attractions. Its valley contains over 100 lakes in colors that seem impossible: turquoise emerald sapphire and jade. Waterfalls cascade between lakes; forests turn gold in autumn. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Five Flower Lake
Five Flower Lake is Jiuzhaigou most iconic sight. Its waters display multiple colors simultaneously: deep blue in some spots turquoise in others with fallen tree trunks visible on the bottom. The colors come from mineral deposits and algae. The lake is small but its intensity makes it unforgettable.
Nuorilang Waterfall
Nuorilang Waterfall at 20 meters high and 270 meters wide is the widest waterfall in Jiuzhaigou. The water spreads across a travertine shelf creating a curtain of white. In winter the waterfall freezes into dramatic ice formations.
Long Lake
Long Lake the largest in Jiuzhaigou stretches 7 kilometers through a glacial valley. Its deep blue waters reflect surrounding snow peaks. The lake is the highest in the valley at over 3000 meters. A viewpoint offers panoramic views.
Autumn Colors
In October Jiuzhaigou forests turn brilliant colors: red maples yellow birches orange oaks. The reflection of fall foliage in the colored lakes creates one of China most photographed landscapes. The park is crowded but the beauty justifies the visit.
Park Logistics
Jiuzhaigou requires advance booking especially in peak season. Shuttle buses connect the major sights; private cars are prohibited. The park is large; allow a full day. Stay in the nearby town of Jiuzhaigou for early access.
Getting There
Jiuzhaigou is about 8 hours by road from Chengdu. Flights serve the nearby Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport. The best time to visit is September to November for autumn colors; summer is lush but rainy winter offers frozen waterfalls.
