Arxan: The Volcanic Wonderland of Inner Mongolia

Arxan (Aershan), in eastern Inner Mongolia near the border with Mongolia, is a volcanic landscape of hot springs, lakes, and forests. Despite its remote location, it has become a popular destination for Chinese tourists seeking natural hot springs and unspoiled scenery.

Hot Springs

Arxan is famous for its hot springs, which emerge at temperatures up to 50°C. The waters are rich in minerals and believed to have therapeutic properties. Dozens of hot spring resorts offer pools at various temperatures. The Chinese government has promoted Arxan as a health tourism destination.

Volcanic Landscape

Arxan sits on a volcanic field that was active until about 100,000 years ago. The landscape shows classic volcanic features: cinder cones, lava flows, and crater lakes. The Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) fills a volcanic crater, its blue waters surrounded by forested slopes.

Arxan National Forest Park

The national park contains the region best scenery: volcanic peaks, forests of pine and birch, and clear streams. Hiking trails connect viewpoints. In autumn, the forests turn brilliant colors, making it one of northern China most photogenic landscapes.

Russian Influence

Arxan architecture shows Russian influence, with wooden buildings and onion domes. The town was on the railway connecting China and Russia, and Russian traders passed through. Today, Russian tourists visit for the hot springs.

Winter Tourism

In winter, Arxan becomes a ski destination. The reliable snow and forested slopes create good conditions. The hot springs are especially appealing after a day on the slopes. The winter landscape, with snow on volcanic cones, is dramatic.

Getting There

Arxan has an airport with flights from Beijing and other cities. Trains connect to Ulanhot and other Inner Mongolian cities. The town can be explored in 2-3 days. Summer and winter are both popular seasons; spring and autumn are quieter.
