Kanbula: The Red Cliff Landform of Qinghai

Kanbula National Forest Park, in Jianzha County, Qinghai Province, features a dramatic landscape of red sandstone cliffs, forests, and the Yellow River. The red cliffs contrast with green pines and blue water, creating one of the most colorful landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau.

Danxia Landform

Kanbula red cliffs are a Danxia landform, formed from red sandstone uplifted and eroded into towers, pillars, and ravines. The shapes are fantastic: some resemble animals, others human figures. The red color is especially vivid at sunrise and sunset.

Yellow River Views

The Yellow River flows through Kanbula, its waters clear and blue here before becoming the silt-laden torrent of its lower reaches. The Lijia Gorge is particularly scenic, with cliffs rising from the water. Boat trips offer close views of the cliffs and forests.

Tibetan Culture

Kanbula is in a Tibetan area of Qinghai. Villages with traditional houses and chortens dot the landscape. The local people are farmers and herders, maintaining customs that blend Tibetan Buddhism with local traditions. Homestays can be arranged.

Nanzong Temple

Nanzong Temple, a Buddhist monastery, sits within the park. The temple is small but active, with monks performing daily rituals. The setting, surrounded by red cliffs and forest, is serene.

Seasonal Changes

Kanbula transforms through the year. Spring brings green leaves to the forests. Summer is lush and warm. Autumn turns the leaves gold and red, complementing the cliffs. Winter is cold but offers stark beauty with snow on the red rocks.

Getting There

Kanbula is about 130 kilometers from Xining, reachable by road via Jianzha. The park requires a full day to explore. Basic accommodation is available. Summer is the best time to visit; spring and autumn are also good. Winter is cold but offers unique scenery.
