Huashan: The Most Perilous of China's Five Great Mountains

Huashan, in southern Shaanxi Province, is renowned as the most dangerous of China's Five Great Mountains. Its five peaks, rising like a lotus flower, are connected by narrow paths clinging to vertical cliffs. The mountain has been a Taoist retreat for centuries, but its fame now comes from the adrenaline-pumping ascent.

Five Peaks

Huashan's five peaks represent the petals of a lotus: North, South, East, West, and Central. The South Peak (2,155m) is the highest. Each peak has temples, viewing platforms, and distinctive views. The full circuit takes 4–6 hours on the mountain.

The Plank Walk

Huashan's most famous feature is the Plank Walk — wooden boards bolted to a vertical cliff face, with only a chain to hold. Below is a sheer drop. The walk is optional (there's a bypass), but many attempt it for the thrill. Safety harnesses are now required. It's one of the world's most exposed paths.

Cable Cars and Paths

Two cable cars serve Huashan: one to the North Peak, another near the West Peak. Most visitors take a cable car up and walk between peaks, then descend by cable car. The full hike from the base is extremely strenuous, taking 6–8 hours up.

Taoist Heritage

Huashan has been a Taoist mountain since at least the 2nd century BCE. The Jade SpringBpring Temple at the base was a center of Taoist learning. Temples on the peaks continue to operate, with monks tending incense and receiving pilgrims. The mountain's isolation made it ideal for spiritual retreat.

Sunrise and Night Climb

Many visitors climb at night, reaching the East Peak for sunrise. The path is lit, and the experience of ascending in darkness to see dawn break over the peaks is unforgettable. The East Peak viewing platform is crowded at sunrise, but the spectacle is worth it.

Getting There

Huashan is about 2 hours by high-speed train from Xi'an. The mountain requires a full day; start early. Spring and autumn are the best times; summer is hot and crowded, winter is cold but offers clear views. Wear good shoes and bring water.
