Moganshan: The Bamboo Retreat Near Shanghai

Moganshan, in Zhejiang Province about 60 kilometers from Hangzhou, has been a summer retreat since the 1890s. Foreign residents of Shanghai built villas here to escape the city's heat. Today, the mountain offers cool temperatures, bamboo forests, and historic architecture — a peaceful escape from the urban intensity of the Yangtze Delta.

Bamboo Forests

Moganshan is covered in bamboo — dense groves that rustle in the wind and filter the light to a green glow. Paths wind through the bamboo, opening occasionally to views of the valley below. The sound of wind in bamboo is one of the mountain's signature experiences.

Historic Villas

Over 200 stone villas survive from the early 20th century, built by foreign residents and Chinese officials. The architecture is European in style: stone walls, wooden balconies, and tiled roofs. Many have been converted to guesthouses and boutique hotels. The former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling is now a museum.

Jianchi Sword Pond

The Jianchi (Sword Pond) is a scenic highlight. A waterfall drops into a pool; the surrounding rocks are carved with inscriptions. Legend says the legendary swordsmith Ganjiang cast swords here. The area is one of Moganshan's most photographed spots.

Cool Climate

At 700 meters, Moganshan is significantly cooler than the plains below. In summer, when Hangzhou and Shanghai swelter, the mountain offers relief. This is why it became a retreat in the first place. The temperature difference is noticeable as soon as you ascend.

Tea Culture

Moganshan produces a high-quality green tea, grown on terraced slopes. Tea houses serve the local brew with views of the valleys. The tea culture is part of the mountain's leisurely atmosphere.

Getting There

Moganshan is about 1.5 hours by car from Hangzhou or 3 hours from Shanghai. Buses run from Hangzhou. The mountain can be explored in a day, but an overnight stay allows for evening strolls and morning mist. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times; summer is busy but still cooler than the cities.
