Daocheng: The Gateway to Yading's Sacred Peaks
Daocheng, in southern Sichuan near the Yunnan border, is the gateway to the Yading Nature Reserve. This small Tibetan town, at 3,750 meters, serves as the last outpost before the sacred mountains. The journey here — crossing high passes and passing through dramatic landscapes — is part of the experience.
Rubingka: The Red Grassland
Just outside Daocheng, the Rubingka area features meadows that turn brilliant red in autumn. The color comes from a type of water grass; the effect is surreal — a red sea against blue sky and distant snow peaks. Photographers consider it one of Sichuan's most photogenic landscapes. The best time is late September to mid-October.
Daocheng Town
Daocheng town, though modernized, retains Tibetan character. The main street has shops selling trekking gear, oxygen, and supplies for Yading. Restaurants serve Tibetan and Sichuan food. The surrounding hills are dotted with chortens (stupas) and prayer flags. The town is small enough to explore in an hour.
Daocheng Yading Airport
Daocheng Yading Airport, at 4,411 meters, is the world's highest civilian airport. The flight from Chengdu takes about an hour but lands you at extreme altitude — acclimatization is essential. The airport is 50 kilometers from Daocheng town; shuttle buses connect them. The runway is squeezed between mountains, making for a dramatic approach.
Hot Springs
Natural hot springs near Daocheng provide relief after long journeys. Several resorts offer pools at various temperatures. The combination of high-altitude air and hot water is relaxing — though altitude sickness can worsen in hot water, so use caution.
Tibetan Culture
Daocheng is in the Kham Tibetan region. The local people are semi-nomadic herders who maintain traditional dress and customs. Women wear braided hair with coral and turquoise; men often have red tassels. Buddhism is visible in daily life: prayer wheels, mani walls, and temple visits.
Getting There
Daocheng is reachable by air from Chengdu or by road (2 days). The road journey, while long, offers spectacular scenery. Most visitors stay 1-2 nights before continuing to Yading. The best time is September–October for clear views and autumn colors.
