Hailuogou: The Glacier at the Foot of Gongga Mountain

Hailuogou (Conch Gully), on the eastern slope of Gongga Mountain in Sichuan, contains China's lowest-altitude modern glacier. At just 2,850 meters, the glacier tongue is accessible to visitors without mountaineering skills. The combination of ice, hot springs, and virgin forest makes Hailuogou a unique destination.

The Glacier

Hailuogou Glacier descends from Gongga Mountain (7,556m), the highest peak in Sichuan. The glacier tongue, about 6 kilometers long, ends in a forest of ancient trees — a rare sight. Visitors can walk on the ice (with caution) or view it from boardwalks. The ice formations — crevasses, ice caves, and seracs — are dramatic. The glacier is retreating rapidly due to climate change.

Hot Springs

Remarkably, hot springs emerge at the foot of the glacier. At Camp 2, outdoor pools allow you to soak in hot water while viewing ice and snow. The contrast between hot and cold is unique. The springs are rich in minerals and are believed to have therapeutic properties.

Virgin Forest

Below the glacier, Hailuogou preserves one of Sichuan's largest tracts of virgin forest. Ancient trees — some over 1,000 years old — tower over a lush understory of rhododendrons, bamboo, and ferns. Waterfalls cascade down cliffs; the air is moist and fragrant. The forest is home to takin, red pandas, and numerous bird species.

Gongga Mountain Views

Gongga Mountain, the "King of Sichuan Mountains," is visible from Hailuogou on clear days. The peak, perpetually snow-capped, rises dramatically above the valley. Sunrise and sunset views from the viewing platforms are spectacular — the mountain turns gold while the valley remains in shadow.

Cable Car and Camps

A cable car rises from Camp 2 to Camp 3, near the glacier. The ride offers views over the forest and ice. Camps 1, 2, and 3 offer accommodation ranging from basic to comfortable. Many visitors stay overnight to catch sunrise views.

Getting There

Hailuogou is about 3 hours by road from Chengdu, via Ya'an. The road crosses the Erlang Pass, offering dramatic scenery. The best time to visit is spring and autumn; summer is rainy, winter is cold but offers the clearest views. Altitude can affect some visitors; take it easy.
