Qinghai Lake: The Sacred Waters of the Tibetan Plateau

Qinghai Lake, at 3,200 meters elevation in Qinghai Province, is China's largest lake. For Tibetans, it is a sacred sea; for the Chinese government, it is a critical ecological zone. The lake's vast blue waters, surrounded by grasslands and snow-capped mountains, create one of China's most dramatic landscapes.

Scale and Beauty

Qinghai Lake covers 4,400 square kilometers — larger than any freshwater lake in China. Its waters are intensely blue, especially on clear days. The surrounding grasslands bloom with rapeseed flowers in July, creating fields of yellow against blue water. The horizon seems infinite.

Tibetan Sacred Site

For Tibetans, Qinghai Lake (Kokonor in Tibetan) is home to a powerful spirit. Annual ceremonies honor the lake deity. Pilgrims circumambulate the lake, a journey of 360 kilometers, typically taking 10-15 days on foot. The practice is similar to circumambulating Mount Kailash.

Bird Island

Bird Island, actually a peninsula, is a major nesting site for migratory birds. In spring and summer, tens of thousands of bar-headed geese, gulls, and cormorants breed here. The sight and sound of thousands of birds is unforgettable. A museum and viewing platforms provide access.

Cycling Around the Lake

The annual Qinghai Lake International Cycling Race draws international teams to circle the lake. Recreational cyclists also attempt the circuit, typically taking 4-5 days. Bike rentals are available in Xining. The route is flat to rolling, but altitude makes it challenging.

Yugu People

The Yugu, a small ethnic minority related to Mongols, live around the lake. They are traditional herders, known for their expertise with horses and yaks. Yugu culture blends Mongolian and Tibetan elements. Some villages welcome visitors.

Ecological Concerns

Qinghai Lake has been shrinking due to climate change and water diversion. Recent years have seen some recovery, but the ecosystem remains fragile. The lake is a barometer for environmental change on the Tibetan Plateau.

Getting There

Qinghai Lake is about 150 kilometers from Xining, reachable by bus or organized tour. Allow at least one full day; two days allows for cycling or visiting multiple sites. Summer is the best time; winter is cold and facilities close. Xining has an airport and high-speed rail connections.
