Xidi vs. Hongcun: Which Anhui Village Should You Visit?

Xidi and Hongcun, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Anhui Province, represent the finest Hui-style architecture and merchant culture. But which should you visit? This guide compares the two to help you decide — or plan to see both.

Hongcun: Water and Photography

Hongcun's defining feature is water. The Moon Pond and South Lake create mirror-like reflections of the white-walled, black-tiled houses. The water system, designed like a buffalo, flows past every house. Photographers love Hongcun for the reflections, especially at dawn. The village is smaller but more photogenic.

Xidi: Architecture and Space

Xidi's defining feature is architecture. Its memorial archways, grand houses, and spacious courtyards showcase Hui craftsmanship. The "Z" shaped street layout creates a sense of discovery around every corner. Xidi is larger than Hongcun, with more houses to explore. It feels more like a town, Hongcun more like a painting.

Tourist Numbers

Hongcun receives more tourists, especially Chinese tour groups and photography enthusiasts. The famous photo spots can be crowded at peak times. Xidi sees fewer visitors, making it more peaceful. If you want quiet, choose Xidi; if you want the iconic image, choose Hongcun.

Best Time to Visit

Both villages are most crowded at midday. Early morning (before 8am) and evening (after 5pm) are the best times. Hongcun's reflections are best at dawn. Xidi's architecture can be appreciated at any time. An overnight stay in either village allows you to experience both quiet periods.

Accommodation

Both villages have guesthouses in converted courtyard houses. Hongcun has more options, including some boutique properties. Xidi's accommodation is more basic. Staying overnight is highly recommended for both.

Distance and Logistics

The villages are about 20 kilometers apart, 30 minutes by car. Many visitors see both in a single day, starting with Hongcun at dawn, then Xidi in the afternoon. A more relaxed pace is one village per day.

If time permits, visit both — they are complementary. Hongcun for the water, reflections, and iconic images. Xidi for the architecture, grand houses, and relative quiet. If you must choose one: photographers prefer Hongcun; architecture enthusiasts prefer Xidi.
