Dali Old Town vs. Xizhou: The Bai Heartland Explored
While Dali Old Town draws most tourists to the region, Xizhou, about 20 kilometers north, offers a more intimate experience of Bai culture. This comparison explores the distinct characters of these two destinations and why both deserve a visit.
Dali Old Town: The Tourist Hub
Dali Old Town is the region's tourism center, with hotels, restaurants, and shops catering to visitors. The Foreigners' Street, once a backpacker haven, still draws a bohemian crowd. The town's walls, gates, and grid layout recall its history as the seat of a prefecture. The pace is relaxed, the views of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake are ever-present.
Xizhou: The Living Bai Town
Xizhou, by contrast, is a working town where Bai traditions remain strong. Its morning market is among the most authentic in Yunnan, selling local produce, prepared foods, and household goods. The architecture is finer than Dali's, with elaborate carved doors and painted lintels. Xizhou is famous for its baba — a flatbread baked over charcoal.
Architecture Comparison
Both towns feature Bai architecture, but Xizhou's is more concentrated and better preserved. The Yan Family Compound in Xizhou is a grand courtyard house built by a wealthy merchant. The Xizhou Architectural Museum showcases the distinctive elements: horse-head gables, carved wooden screens, and painted decorations. Dali's architecture is more mixed, with modern interventions.
Markets and Daily Life
Xizhou's market, held every morning, is a sensory experience: mounds of spices, fresh vegetables, prepared foods, and household goods. Bai women in traditional clothing shop and chat. Dali's markets are more tourist-oriented, though the morning market near the South Gate still serves locals.
Proximity to Erhai Lake
Dali Old Town sits slightly away from the lake, with the fishing village of Caicun as its nearest access. Xizhou is closer to the water, with rice paddies between town and shore. Cycling from Dali to Xizhou along the lake is a popular excursion.
