Heijing: The Salt Town of Yunnan's Hidden Valley

Heijing, in Lufeng County, Yunnan Province, was once one of China's most important salt-producing towns. For over 1,000 years, its salt mines generated wealth that built a town of remarkable architecture. Today, this hidden gem in a narrow valley sees few tourists but offers an authentic glimpse into Yunnan's commercial history.

Salt Mining History

Salt has been mined at Heijing since the Tang Dynasty. The salt deposits, formed from ancient seas, were extracted using traditional methods until recently. Salt was a state monopoly, and Heijing's output generated significant tax revenue. The decline of the industry in the 20th century left the town frozen in time.

Traditional Architecture

Heijing's wealth built a town of extraordinary architecture. Over 50 well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty houses remain. The Wu family mansion, built by salt merchants, has over 100 rooms. The structures combine Han Chinese and local Yunnan styles: carved wooden screens, stone-paved courtyards, and tiled roofs.

The Ancient Salt Well

The old salt well, though no longer in production, can be visited. Brine was drawn from deep underground and boiled in large pans to crystallize the salt. The process was labor-intensive and dangerous; many workers died from heat and fumes.

Confucius Temple and Theater

Heijing's Confucius Temple, built in the Ming Dynasty, served as a school for the merchant families. The adjacent theater hosted performances for festivals. Both are well-preserved and open to visitors. The town's small museum displays salt-mining tools and historical artifacts.

Hidden Valley Setting

Heijing sits in a narrow valley carved by the Longchuan River. Mountains rise steeply on both sides; sunlight reaches the town only for a few hours each day. The isolation protected the architecture from development and gives the town an intimate, enclosed feeling.

Getting There

Heijing is about 2 hours by road from Kunming, via Lufeng. The town is small enough to explore on foot in a half-day. Basic guesthouses are available. The best time to visit is spring or autumn; summer is hot, winter is mild. Combine with nearby恐龙 (dinosaur) fossil sites in Lufeng.
