Zhangye: The Rainbow Mountains of Gansu
Zhangye, in central Gansu Province, is home to one of China's most surreal landscapes: the Danxia landform, where hills are striped with red, orange, yellow, and green. This "Rainbow Mountain" has become an Instagram sensation, but the region offers much more: Silk Road history, giant Buddha statues, and remote grasslands.
Danxia Landform
The Zhangye Danxia National Geopark contains hills striped with multiple colors — the result of red sandstone and mineral deposits laid down over millions of years and uplifted by tectonic forces. The colors are most vivid at sunrise and sunset. The park has multiple viewing platforms connected by shuttle buses. Photographers spend hours waiting for the perfect light.
Giant Buddha Temple
Zhangye's Giant Buddha Temple, built in 1098, houses China's largest indoor reclining Buddha — 34.5 meters long, with shoulders 7.5 meters wide. The Buddha's eyes are said to open if you stand at the correct angle. The temple complex includes a museum with artifacts from the Silk Road era.
Silk Road History
Zhangye, ancient Ganzhou, was a major Silk Road oasis. The city's Wooden Pagoda, built in 582 CE, is one of China's oldest. The city walls and gates reflect its importance as a frontier garrison. The Zhangye Museum displays Silk Road artifacts, including Roman coins found in the region.
Binggou Danxia
While the colorful Danxia gets most attention, the nearby Binggou Danxia features dramatic rock formations — towers, pillars, and ravines sculpted by wind and water. The landscape resembles an alien planet. Fewer visitors come here, making it more peaceful.
Shandan Army Horse Farm
About 60 kilometers from Zhangye, the Shandan Army Horse Farm has bred horses for the Chinese military since the Han Dynasty. At its peak, it had 100,000 horses. Today, it is a working farm where visitors can ride horses across grasslands surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
Getting There
Zhangye has an airport with flights from Lanzhou and Xi'an. High-speed trains connect to Lanzhou (about 3 hours). The Danxia park is about 40 kilometers from the city. Plan at least 2 days. The best time to visit is June–September; winter is cold and the colors are less vivid.
