Gongtan: The Millennium Ancient Town on the Wujiang River
Gongtan, in Youyang County, Chongqing Municipality, is a 1,700-year-old town perched on a cliff above the Wujiang River. Its location — accessible only by water until recently — preserved it from modernization. The town's wooden houses, built on stilts against the cliff face, create one of the most dramatic architectural ensembles in China.
Cliffside Architecture
Gongtan's most distinctive feature is its diaojiaolou — stilted wooden houses built into the cliff face. Three or four stories tall, they seem to hang above the river. The structures are supported by wooden posts driven into the rock, a technique developed over centuries. Walking the narrow lanes between buildings, you can peer through gaps to the river far below.
Wujiang River
The Wujiang, a major tributary of the Yangtze, flows jade-green beneath Gongtan. For centuries, the town was a river port; boats carried salt, timber, and opium downstream. Today, the river offers boat rides past dramatic gorges and waterfalls. The water level has risen due to downstream dams, changing but not destroying the town's character.
Tujia and Miao Culture
Gongtan is home to Tujia and Miao minorities. Tujia women wear embroidered jackets and silver ornaments; Miao women are known for their elaborate silver headdresses. Traditional crafts include batik, embroidery, and bamboo weaving. The town hosts festivals during the lunar New Year and harvest season.
Stairs and Alleys
Gongtan is a vertical town. Stone stairways, some hundreds of steps, connect the riverbank to the clifftop streets. Alleys wind between buildings, sometimes passing through houses, sometimes opening to sudden views of the river. The town is small but rewards exploration.
The Old Salt Wharf
Gongtan was once a major salt trading center. Salt from Sichuan was shipped downstream to Hunan and Guizhou. The old salt wharf, with its stone steps and warehouses, remains. The salt trade declined in the 20th century, but the buildings survive as reminders of the town's commercial past.
Getting There
Gongtan is reached via Youyang, about 5 hours by road from Chongqing. From Youyang, boats or buses reach Gongtan in about 1 hour. The town has basic guesthouses; some are in converted stilt houses. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit; summer is hot, winter is cold but atmospheric.
Nearby Attractions
The Wujiang Gorge, downstream from Gongtan, offers dramatic scenery. The nearby Youyang Miao and Tujia Autonomous County has other traditional villages. The combination of river, cliff, and traditional architecture makes Gongtan unique.
